Day #8

Breakfast with Dr. Jonathan Jansen was a major highlight of this whole experience so far! Just a humble, intelligent, hopeful and insightful gentleman. He shared with us his new research for his next book and beautiful words of hope for our generation and country.

Words of wisdom with this amazing human:
Be true to yourself
Live by example
Walk the talk
If you give, you will receive
It is important to do what people don’t expect

Our discussion was surrounded by interracial relationships; the beauty of change, yet the struggle for acceptance. Our family and environment are the foundation for what our customs and conventions are throughout our lives. Growing up in a diverse town where my parents accepted anyone who was kind and decent, helped build my openness to everyone who was kind and decent to me. It was wild to hear stories of how parents and grandparents are still influencing the mores of their future generations, making interracial relationships sometimes unacceptable or unthinkable. The realization that I myself am in an interracial relationship, being a Hispanic female and married to a white male, was never acknowledged til now. This simply demonstrates the accepting, open environment that we will raise our children up in, just as our parents did for us.

Next, we visited Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology. This academy brings together learners from all communities, with an emphasis on those from disadvantaged communities. It was great to see just a sample of the extraordinary work these students are doing here and the success of many of their alumni. Here lays hope for the learners we’ve met who dream to be pilots and astronauts 🙂

We finished the day at Groot Constantia Wine Estate and Table Mountain… the pictures say it all!!!
