Day #6

Off to Cape Town! 😀

In 1652, Cape Town was founded when Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company (based in The Netherlands) arrived to set up a halfway point for ships travelling to the East.  Since then, it grew to be the second largest city in South Africa with 3.5 million people.  Big lights!  Big buildings!  Beautiful mountains!

We arrived in the afternoon, just in time to head to Kalk Bay.  This fishing village on the coast of False Bay has a stunning view overlooking the harbor, boats and surfers!  Dr. Clarke surprised us as we walked into a bookstore where we soon found out that Dr. Jansen, author, previous Vice-Chancellor at the University of the Free State, and Stanford’s Alumni Excellence in Education Award recipient was being interviewed about his new book, As by Fire.  The quaint bookstore was filled with South Africans who share the interest and concern for higher education across their country.  Afterwards, we met with him briefly, joking about the politics in our own country.  I look forward to engaging with him more over breakfast on Friday 🙂
